From the Castlewood Funeral Home website link for Raymond Scott Hamilton.

MIDLAND, NORTH CAROLINA – Raymond Scott Hamilton, 39, passed away Saturday, September 25, 2010 after a long, courageous, and inspirational battle with esophageal cancer, which he was diagnosed with on February 26, 2008. After twenty-eight days of radiation therapy, several rounds of chemotherapy, and two surgeries, the cancer was non-detectable using a CT scan. Unfortunately, the cancer recurred in the lining of the stomach in June 2009 and was diagnosed as terminal.

He is survived by his wife, Rebecca Lee Hamilton, and three sons, Raymond Bradley Hamilton (17), William Brandon Hamilton (15), and Cameron Braxton Hamilton (4), all of the home in Midland, North Carolina; his mother, Hazel Hamilton Kennedy, and special dad, Garland Kennedy, of St. Paul, Virginia; one sister, Melissa Ann Jones, of St. Paul, Virginia; one brother, Stacey Wayne Hamilton, and wife Christina, of Boone, North Carolina; three nieces, Kelsey Brooke Hamilton, Lillan Ava-Marie Jones, Anna Gilley; and four nephews, Mason Reese Hamilton, Harrison Brock Jones, Thomas Gilley, and Kristian Rasnake.

Scott was a devoted dad, a loving husband, a good son, a generous and giving gentleman, and a true friend to those that knew him both within the Brotherhood of the Sigma Chi Fraternity and those outside of the Brotherhood. He sincerely loved his entire family and friends with all of his heart and would do anything for anyone at anytime. He thoroughly enjoyed the tunes of the amazing recording artist, Jimmy Buffet, whose songs just enlightened his spirit. In fact, he loved most music, with the exceptions of classical, rap, or extremely heavy metal. He loved doing jigsaw puzzles and thought this was a great activity for the entire family!

Scott graduated with honors from St. Paul High School in St. Paul, Virginia, in 1988 with the assistance of some great teachers, administration, and staff. To everyone affiliated with St. Paul High School between 1984 and 1988, he sends a special thank you for the high quality and level of education he received, because of your instruction, guidance, and leadership as well as maintaining a safe environment for learning!

He went on to pursue his collegiate career at Radford University in Radford, Virginia, in the fall of 1988. He graduated in 1992 with a degree in Human Resource Management. While at Radford University, he had an amazing time and met many new and amazing friends. He was honored and privileged to pledge his life to the Sigma Chi Fraternity, the greatest Fraternity in the world, whereby the organization gave him favor and distinction. He loved Sigma Chi with his entire being and often spoke highly of his beloved Fraternity! He was a stranger to no one and befriended almost all he came into contact with. Those enduring personal friendships he was able to cultivate and maintain were a lifelong devotion and commitment to him. He did his best to foster those cherished friendships through the years!

His spirit will continue to live on through those that he impacted during his life. A special thanks to the Midland Community to which he played a large part, being a board member on the Bethel Athletic Association for many years. As well as a Coach and a volunteer in the community to which he loved and admired so greatly. He respected the community and loved the children no matter what their backgrounds were. Please remember that life is about quality as well as guarantee and you make of it as you wish. “Dream big, dream a lot.”

Becky Ann Wyatt

Becky Ann Wyatt

Class of 1984
June 2, 2008

CASTLEWOOD, Va. – Rebecca “Becky” Ann Wyatt, age 42, departed this earth for her heavenly home after a very courageous battle with cancer on Monday, June 2, 2008.

She was born on Dec. 29, 1965, in Washington County, Va., a daughter of the late Elizabeth Patrick Farmer.

Becky had many friends who she considered to be her “family” and loved them unconditionally. They included Shellie Ring, who she called “sister” and who cared for her during the last few months of her life with complete love and devotion, carrying out her every wish; Shellie’s brothers, Lennie Ring, to whom Becky referred to as the “love of her life,” and Michael, who she called her “little brother”; Shellie’s mother, who Becky called “Momma Jude”; and Ezra Dye, “Uncle Ez,” who Becky said she respected more than any man she had ever known and wished that he could have been her dad. She also cared deeply for childhood friend, Jeannie Whited of Orange, Va., as well as her friends from the law offices of Arrington Schelin & Herrell. She regarded Danny Pritchard, her former brother-in-law as her “brother forever.” Along with Danny, she deeply loved his wife, “Miss Pattie,” whom she said was an answer to a prayer for Danny to have in his life. Finally, she was forever grateful for the unconditional love, support and lasting friendship that she had with her “best friends,” Charlotte Duff, Kim Willis and Linda Childress along with her husband Tim, who Becky also considered a “brother.”

She attended public schools in Russell and Wise counties and was a 1984 graduate of St. Paul High School. After briefly attending Virginia Highlands Community College, Becky enrolled at Virginia Intermont College and graduated in 1995 with a bachelor’s degree in paralegal studies. While at Virginia Intermont, she excelled academically and was the recipient of numerous honors and awards. She was especially proud to have been selected as part of the Worrell Honors Program for Studies Abroad and shared many memories of her trip to Germany with everyone.

Shortly after graduation, Becky accepted a position at Virginia Intermont as an employee in the J.F. Hicks Library, where she remained for several years. Driven to pursue her interest in the legal field, Becky worked for various law firms in the area as a paralegal until she became too ill to continue. The law firms Becky worked for include Tate, Lowe & Rowlett, Mary Lynn Tate, P.C., Arrington Schelin & Herrell, P.C., and Ward, Bishop & Rasnic, P.C. She will always be remembered for her dedication to the clients she served and for the passion she had for the legal field.

Becky was truly a unique person with many interests and talents. She loved the University of Kentucky basketball team so much that she always remarked, “My blood runs blue!” She was also an ardent supporter of the Bristol Virginia Democratic committee and provided many hours of hard work toward the compilation of a cookbook which continues to be a successful fundraiser.

Becky was a free spirit who loved life, people and laughter. She never met a stranger and always made fast friends with everyone she encountered. To honor Becky’s legacy, she would like for everyone to keep love in your heart, share a kind word with a friend, and perhaps give a little of your time to help someone in need.

Special thanks to Grace Healthcare in Abingdon and the Hospice of SouthWest Virginia for the care and loving attention given to Becky.

In keeping with Becky’s wishes, her body will be cremated and a celebration of life service will be held at a later time.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Becky’s name to Virginia Intermont College, 1013 Moore St., Bristol, VA 24201; or the American Cancer Society.

She was preceded in death by her foster mother, the late Johnnie Van Diver.

She is survived by her sisters, Patricia Prichard of Coeburn, Va., and Ruth Hall and her children, Mark, Candace, Shantell, and Dillon, all of Knoxville, Tenn. She is also survived by her foster father, Ralph Van Diver of Coeburn, and her foster sister, Gena Slemp of Coeburn.
